Understanding Texas Associate Supervision Requirements
Texas requires LMFT Associates and LPC Associates to complete supervised professional experience before becoming eligible to apply for independent licensure. Although both paths require 3,000 supervised hours, the minimum time periods, direct-service requirements, and supervision requirements differ. Associates should review the current requirements of the Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council and discuss their individual circumstances with their supervisor.
LPC Associate Requirements
Texas LPC Associates must complete at least 3,000 hours of supervised experience over a minimum of 18 months. At least 1,500 hours must involve direct counseling services, and associates must receive the required ongoing supervision during their supervised experience.
LMFT Associate Requirements
Texas LMFT Associates must complete at least two years and 3,000 hours of supervised clinical experience. At least 1,500 hours must involve direct clinical services, including at least 500 hours providing direct clinical services to couples or families. Current rules also specify minimum supervision requirements during the associate period.
Licensing requirements can change
Associates are responsible for confirming current requirements directly with the Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council.
